The Pervasive Technology Lab is a non-profit organisation created to explore the use of new
technology to support people with illnesses and in particular with Mental Health problems.
The term pervasive means 'around us' in all areas of our lives. Technology can be as
pervasive as other aspects of our lives and in many cases already with the use of mobile
phones in our lives where we are contactable from almost anywhere. Technologies such as
the mobile phone can be tailored to meet the needs of those that have special requirements
with medical conditions. The organisation's intention is to research and produce technology
that will be of clear benefit to those with illnesses. In order to produce useful products
a user-centred approach to development is carried out as well as thorough technical testing
of the products to ensure that the product has advantages over traditional methods and
the product is a complete and robust support tool for patients. The organisation has
expertise in a number of methodologies and computer languages to ensure the best option
is chosen for the development process. Projects have been presented in conferences and
journal articles. The approaches to system development are intended to provide applications
that are innovative as well as being beneficial to the client.
